Master Instructor Program Transitions to Internet-Based Application Process

Provides More Efficient Workflow Yet Maintains Rigorous Standards

The Master Instructor Continuing Education Program (MICEP) began its transition to an Internet-based application process in October 2013, joining organizations such as TEDx, Disney, and Chicago Public Schools as clients of FluidReview’s online application management system. This is one of several key upgrades made to the program as a result of a meeting of the Board of Review in February 2013. Other improvements have included overhauling the Master Instructors LLC website, creating a Facebook page and YouTube channel, and producing a new tri-fold brochure for MICEP.

Although the online process offers an improved and time saving user experience, applicants must still meet the same demanding standards to earn a MICEP accreditation. Program Administrator JoAnn Hill commented, “We are really excited about the new system and how it has streamlined our application and review workflows.” Hill added, “Not only is the online process more efficient, but it also results in much stronger submissions by applicants compared to the old paper method.” Feedback from beta testers of the new system has been positive, ranging from “it was a really great experience” to “the new process is wonderful.”

According to the organization’s website, MICEP is “a professional approach to professional accreditation” that offers a family of designations for aviation educators based on advanced professional standards and rigorous peer review. The program is open to qualified aviation educators regardless of their other affiliations, is FAA WINGS-approved, and can be used to renew unexpired flight instructor certificates. Further, the $225 biennial application fee is more than offset by the 10 to 40 percent increase in income realized by the majority of MICEP Masters as a direct result of their participation in the program.

Launched in 1997 after two years of research and development, MICEP was the first accreditation program of its kind for aviation educators. In 2009, Master Instructors LLC was formed to administer the program autonomously and to ensure continued impartiality and integrity throughout the designation process. The program’s underlying principles coupled with its success have made it the model for spinoffs; MICEP, however, remains the largest such program with at least four times the level of participation compared to its derivatives.

Master Instructors LLC has set December 1st, 2013 as the cutoff for paper applications. Thereafter, all MICEP applications must be submitted using the online system. For more information, visit www.MasterInstructors.org.
