  • FEBRUARY 2017

Master Instructors LLC (MI LLC) and its Board of Review take pride in announcing a significant aviation accomplishment on the part of these very special aviation educators.  Recently, they were all accredited through MI LLC’s https://MICEP.FluidReview.com/ as Masters by Master Instructors LLC, the international Master Instructor accrediting authority (US Copyright Office registration number TX0006987479).

To help put these achievements in their proper perspective, there are approximately 101,000 FAA-certificated CFIs in the United States. Fewer than 800 of them have earned Master accreditation thus far.  As a measure of the significance and prestige associated with this title, twenty-three (23) of the last National Flight Instructors of the Year, National FAASTeam Representatives of the Year, or National AMTs of the Year were Masters  (see: http://www.GeneralAviationAwards.org/)   In addition, the FAA has approved the accreditation as an alternate means for CFIs to renew their flight instructor certificates.

Professional aviation educators who earned or renewed their “Master” title during February 2017 are:

The Master Instructor designation is a national accreditation recognized by the FAA and revered by industry.  It is earned by a candidate through a rigorous process of continuing professional activity and peer review.  Much like a flight instructor’s certificate, it must be renewed biennially.  This process parallels continuing education regimens used by other professionals to enhance their knowledge base while increasing their professionalism. Simply put, the Master Instructor designation is a means by which to identify those outstanding aviation educators, those “Teachers of Flight,” who are demonstrating an ongoing commitment to excellence, professional growth, and service to the aviation community.

Through their dedication to excellence, Masters have earned their “black belts” in aviation education. They truly represent the crème de la crème of the aviation industry!  High and low resolution photos are available upon request.

Master Instructors LLC takes great pride in announcing a significant aviation accomplishment on the part of Richard L Stowell Jr, the 2006 Nat’l CFI of the Year as well as the 2014 Nat’l FAASTeam Rep of the Year and resident of McCall, Idaho.

Recently, Rich’s accreditation as a Master CFI-Aerobatic (Certificated Flight Instructor-Aerobatic) was renewed by Master Instructors LLC, the international accrediting authority for the Master Instructor designation as well as the FAA-approved Master Instructor Programä.  He first earned this national professional accreditation in 1999, has held it continuously since then, and is one of only 11 worldwide to earn the credential ten (10) times.

To help put these achievements in their proper perspective, there are approximately 101,000 CFIs in the United States.  Fewer than 800 of those aviation educators have achieved that professional distinction thus far.  Twenty-three (23) of the last National Flight Instructors of the Year, National FAASTeam Representatives of the Year, or National AMTs of the Year — including Rich! — were Masters (see: http://www.GeneralAviationAwards.org/) while Rich is one of only 5 Idaho teachers of flight to earn this prestigious “Master” title and one of only 36 worldwide to earn aerobatic accreditation.

In the words of former FAA Administrator Marion Blakey, “The Master Instructor accreditation singles out the best that the right seat has to offer.”

The Master Instructor designation is a national accreditation recognized by the FAA.  Candidates must demonstrate an ongoing commitment to excellence, professional growth, and service to the aviation community, and must pass a rigorous evaluation by a peer Board of Review.  The process parallels the continuing education regimen used by other professionals to enhance their knowledge base while increasing their professionalism.  Designees are recognized as outstanding aviation educators for not only their excellence in teaching, but for their engagement in the continuous process of learning — both their own, and their students’.  The designation must be renewed biennially and significantly surpasses the FAA requirements for renewal of the candidate’s flight instructor certificate.

  • Two Aviation Educators Earn Master Accreditation for the Tenth Time

Celebrated for 20 Years in the Master Instructor Continuing Education Program

Longmont, CO—In September, Master Instructors LLC designated its next class of Ten-Time Masters.  The historic achievement marks twenty years of participation in the industry acclaimed and FAA approved Master Instructor Continuing Education Program (MICEP).  Two instructors comprise this third group to reach the ten-time milestone: David St George of Ithaca, New York and Robin (Rob) Lindstrom of Huntsville, Alabama.

David Paul "Dave" ST GEORGE, Master CFI
David Paul “Dave” ST GEORGE, Master CFI
Robin Henry "Rob" LINDSTROM, Master CFI & Master GI
Robin Henry “Rob” LINDSTROM, Master CFI & Master GI

St George is a former member of the SAFE board of directors and is now the newly elected chairman of the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE) that represents more than 1000 aviation educators worldwide.  A Part 141 charter pilot, he is also a designated pilot examiner ( http://FAAFlightTest.us/ ) and a FAASTeam representative in the Rochester (NY) FSDO area.

Lindstrom is the assistant chief flight instructor and a ground instructor with the Redstone Arsenal Flying Activity (http://www.FlyingActivity.com/) at Redstone Army Airfield (HUA).  Holder of both Master CFI and Master Ground Instructor accreditations, he is also an aviation instructor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and serves as a FAASTeam representative in the FAA’s Birmingham FSDO area.

Both Ten-Time Masters are charter members of SAFE.

According to MICEP co-creator JoAnn Hill, “We are honored that these individuals have continued with the program for so long, and are excited to share their amazing accomplishment.”  Others will soon join the ranks of Ten-Time Masters over the upcoming months.

As a reward for long-term commitment to professional development as aviation educators, Ten-Time Masters receive embroidered MA-1 flight jackets sponsored by PilotMall.com of Lakeland, FL (jacket photo below).  Additionally, Master Instructors LLC commissioned special wings pins reserved exclusively for Ten-Time and Emeritus Masters, sponsored by Aviation Instruction of Camarillo, CA and Specialty Flight Training of Boulder, CO.  The names of Ten-Time Masters are also listed on a dedicated page on the Master Instructors website ( http://www.MasterInstructors.org/ ) under the menu tab “With Distinction.”

Conceived and developed in 1995 by JoAnn and Sandy Hill of Longmont, Colorado, MICEP was launched in 1997 during AirVenture with the blessing of then-FAA Administrator Barry Valentine.  The Hills, highly experienced educators with a passion for aviation, conceived of the program as a means to encourage and recognize higher levels of professionalism in aviation education.  The program also sets professional standards to which all aviation educators can aspire.

The Hills initially administered the program through another organization; in 2009, however, they formed Master Instructors LLC (MI LLC).  According to MICEP co-creator Sandy Hill, “We, along with a vast majority of Master Instructors, believed the program stood for something much larger than any one organization.”  He added, “moving the program’s management to an independent entity such as MI LLC has provided much greater autonomy and ensured impartiality in the accreditation process.”

The peer-reviewed designation process is rigorous.  In addition to other requirements, applicants must document at least 500 hours in qualifying activities within the previous 24 calendar months.  To foster well-rounded designees, the hours must be distributed among five categories: Educator, Service to the Aviation Community, Creator of Media, Continuing Education, and Participant.  MICEP offers a family of six designations to appeal to a wide range of educators: Master Aviation Educator (MAE), Master Certificated Flight Instructor (MCFI), Master Certificated Flight Instructor-Aerobatic (MCFI-A), Master Certificated Flight Instructor-Helicopter (MCFI-H), Master Ground Instructor (MGI), and Master Instructor Emeritus (MIE).  With the exception of MIE, designation cycles are valid for two (2) years; the MIE, in contrast, is a one-time honorary designation for long-term participation in the program.

The Hills are quick to point out that Master Instructors have “earned their black belts” in aviation education, thus setting them apart from instructors who merely use the job to further their air carrier careers.  The evidence bears out the Hills’ assertion: since 1997, a combined 37 individuals have been honored in the National CFI and FAASTeam Rep of the Year categories, 27 of whom are Master Instructors.  The marketplace has also responded to their commitment to the profession: a poll revealed that most Masters realize a 10 to 40 percent increase in income as a result of their participation in MICEP.

MICEP’s success has been the model for other aviation accreditation programs.  The Soaring Society of America (SSA), for example, drew on the Hills work to develop its Master Instructor Cross-country program.  The derivative programs, however, require membership in the sponsoring organizations to participate.  MICEP, on the other hand, is open to all qualified aviation educators regardless of their other affiliations; membership in a particular organization is not a prerequisite.  With more than 160 active Masters, MICEP remains by far the largest accreditation program of its type for aviation educators.

JoAnn Hill says the program will “continue to serve current Masters while improving outreach to other aviation educators.”  Continuing to influence training standards and doctrine, promote industry programs such as General Aviation Awards, and form new partnerships with training providers are goals as well.
