How the process works

Accreditation is built from five building blocks. Here’s how they fit together.

1 · Stages 2 · Tasks 3 · Categories 4 · Activities 5 · Hours

1 · Stages

Three stages from application to accreditation

1

Application

Complete your Tasks and compile Activities and Hours across the five Categories. The $250 application fee is due only when you’re ready to submit.

2

Review

The Board of Review, made up of MICEP designees, checks your application for completeness and eligibility, looking closely at Hours, dates and documentation. Reviewers may contact you for clarification.

3

Final processing

Administrators weigh the reviewers’ recommendations, may spot-check the application and contact your references. You’ll be notified by email and phone.

If an application is not approved, a $100 processing fee applies.

2 · Tasks

Your application checklist

Everything you’ll provide in Submittable. Emeritus applicants don’t submit Activities and Hours.

4 · Activities

What counts as an Activity

  • It took place within the 24 calendar months before you submit.
  • Each one stands alone, with its Hours, a brief statement of relevance and supporting documentation.
  • Combine similar activities: ten flight reviews totaling 20 Hours become one Activity, “Flight Reviews.”
  • Small, unrelated activities in a Category can be combined into one “Miscellaneous” Activity.
  • Each Activity is claimed once, in whichever Category fits best.
  • No documentation for an Activity? Someone who can vouch for it may complete the MICEP Supporting Document (fillable PDF) as a backup.

5 · Hours

500 Hours in the last 24 months

All time spent with students or trainees, or invested in completing an Activity, counts. Each Category has a minimum, but the minimums alone add up to only 370 — an application that just meets each minimum won’t qualify. The remaining 130 or more can come from any Category.

Whole numbers only

Fractions are rounded down: 123.8 Hours becomes 123.

Split a block of Hours

Hours are claimed once, but can be divided. A 30-hour seminar: 20 hours of preparation under Media, 10 hours of delivery under Educator (or Service, if pro bono).

More than one designation

Submit a separate application for each (for example MCFI and MGI). Hours used for one can’t count toward another.
